1000 miles for CLAPA
Last year, a group of us from Macclesfield decided that we would raise money for charity by rowing the equivalent of the Atlantic Ocean, between us, over the course of 3 and a half months. This meant rowing 10,000 meters every day for 105 days, raising over £3000 for charity in the process. In the weeks that followed, it was strange not having a sporting challenge to complete, after all we had just spent ¼ of the year rowing. So it was decided that a few of us (Tom McKay, Dave Hall and Ben Rathbone) would use the coming winter to train for a challenge even greater than the previous. With us all being cyclists in one form or another, we chose the task of cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
After doing some research we saw that most of these rides last about 12-14 days and cover the distance of about 900 miles. Because we wanted a challenge that would really test us, we decided to shorten the time taken to 10 days, and cover a distance of 1000 miles, cycling an average of 100 miles a day, everyday. What better way to see your country.
We will be setting off on the 1st April, reaching John O’Groats by the 10th April. Another member of the team, Tom Agar, will be joining us by car, following us the entire way, acting as the 1 man support team. Having completed the previous challenge with us, but not being able to commit to the hours of training for the ride, he decided he would help in other ways!
The reason we chose CLAPA as a charity we would raise money for was because we know people who have had a cleft lip in the past, and have come to the Charity for help and guidance on how to tackle the situation. We think it is important to raise money for charities like CLAPA, because who knows who might need their help in the future; future family members or close friends.
