CLAPA Needs You: Bursary Panel Member
Bursary Panel Members
Are you interested in cleft research? Do you want to ensure patients and carers are involved in research? CLAPA has an exciting opportunity to support our Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) bursary scheme.
We are looking for patients, parents and carers from the cleft community to join our Bursary Panel and help CLAPA decide which researcher/clinician applications should receive funding to support their PPI work request.
To facilitate relevant and meaningful Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) in cleft research and cleft services, the CLAPA PPI Bursary has been set up to support researchers and clinicians working within cleft research and NHS Cleft Teams who wish to increase and improve their PPI but have been unable to access funds elsewhere to support their PPI work. They can apply for a bursary of up to £455 worth of support from CLAPA’s Consultancy Service. The bursary is not redeemable for cash.We need your help to be part of a panel to review applications as they are submitted on a monthly basis.
Role Description
You will join a panel of 4-6 members who will read and review bursary applications which are seeking support towards PPI from CLAPA.
You will contribute to decision making with regards to which applications should be approved or declined and how much support should be awarded to successful applicants.
You will be sent the bursary applications to read by email so you must have access to an email account in order to be considered for this role. The applications can be sent in email format or on an excel spreadsheet according to your preference.
You will be required to give your thoughts on the suitability of the applications using the assessment criteria to decide whether it should receive support from CLAPA to aid PPI. It is important that you share your thoughts about the application as we will use this information to inform decision making and to provide unsuccessful applicants with feedback.
CLAPA staff will review the feedback from all of the panel members and make a final decision as to whether or not the application is supported.
An interest in Patient and Public Involvement or research would be beneficial to this role.
Time Commitment
The bursary is open for applications throughout the year. Applications will be sent out at the beginning of the month for comments by the end of the month. If at any time you feel you don’t have the time to read the applications please let us know so we are aware you won’t be participating. Some months may have more than one application and other months may have none.
There will also be an initial 1 hour training session prior to starting. This will be delivered online and can be arranged on a 1:1 basis at a time convenient to yourself.
Assessment Process
CLAPA collates forms on the 1st working day of the month and sends to the panel.
The panel considers the following from the application:
- Do we feel the topic is valuable to the cleft community?
- Is it clear what the applicant wants PPI for?
- Is it feasible for CLAPA to provide what they are asking for?
- Is the PPI request valuable as it stands or would we recommend a different approach to PPI?
- Have the applicants clearly explained how they will use PPI in the future and CLAPA’s involvement?
- Would you support this application for a PPI Bursary? Why?
- How much should be awarded?
The panel submits their thoughts and sends to CLAPA by the last working day of the month.
The panel aid CLAPA in making a decision, however CLAPA will make the final decision.
CLAPA contacts the applicants by the 15th of the following month with outcome and any feedback.
