Sophie’s Story
Sophie is an adult born with a cleft who shared her story about becoming more confident and overcoming challenges.
“I was born with a left-sided cleft lip and palate, and my past has been traumatic.
I didn’t do well in school, was bullied, and made to feel like I didn’t belong.
Ten years ago, I hated who I was, but if you’d asked me tomorrow, I’d do my life all over again because I love myself, I am beautiful, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with us clefties.
There have been many challenges with all the traveling, surgeries, and hospital trips.
I’ve been turned down jobs because of my appearance and cried because I couldn’t make friends.
It’s more common than people think; we’re all beautiful regardless of appearance.
I have a beautiful family, a daughter called Isla, who will be two soon and a husband who understands.
I ask myself daily, ‘Why me?’ but I am the beautiful, confident woman I am today because of it, and I wouldn’t change myself.
Scars are beautiful; scars are unique, and every cleft is a story to be told. Never judge a person because you don’t know their journey. It costs nothing to be kind. ”
