When my father passed away, my mother and I were very pleased to learn that he had decided to leave a gift to CLAPA in his will.Jon Clarke, Supporter
I’m strongly encouraging other families affected by cleft lip and/or palate to consider leaving a gift in their will to CLAPA, to support its work in the future.
Frequently asked questions
A codicil should be used for small changes such as including a gift in your Will to CLAPA. However if you’re making significant changes we would advise writing a new Will instead. If you do choose to use a codicil then you should store it alongside your Will so your executors don’t miss it.
Leaving 10% or more of your estate to charity typically reduces the rate of any Inheritance Tax payable from 40% to 36%. We recommend that you speak to a legal or tax advisor about how the Inheritance Tax rules apply to you and your particular circumstances. As a charity we’re not able to offer legal or tax advice.
We are happy to discuss this, however, it’s a good idea to not restrict your gift too tightly as in the future we may not be running that specific project, as we respond to the changing needs of the cleft community. We recommend you express your wishes in the form of a non-binding wish by saying “it is my wish but without creating any legally binding obligation that…”
Yes, Muslims can leave up to a third of their estate to beneficiaries who will not be a fixed inheritor, such as CLAPA. And by leaving a gift in your Will to us, you can pass on the gift of family to others. Your gift could be an act of Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity that continues after one passes away) supporting families for generations to come.
It’s completely up to you whether you would like to tell us about your gift, we realise that it’s a private matter for some. We always love having the opportunity to thank our supporters as well as keeping them up to date with our work.
- A share of your estate – After you have provided for your loved ones, you can leave a share of what remains to charity. This is known as a ‘residuary gift’.
- A cash gift – This is when you leave an exact sum of money to us. It’s known as a ‘pecuniary gift’.
- A specific gift – Over the years we’ve received everything from a stream to antique jewellery.
- A gift in trust – You can leave a gift for someone to use over a period of time. When the time has ended, the gift can be passed on to other recipients, such as a charity.
If you would like to leave a gift in your Will to the cleft community, we strongly recommend you that you speak to a solicitor to ensure that your wishes will be carried out as you intend.
